Different Paths to Learning.
We all absorb information in different ways. To this day, I still retain information better if I write it out.
Commentary and Evidence on Classroom Practices.
Differentiated Instruction.
The lesson plan titled "Narrative Nonfiction: Vets and Pets" demonstrates my competency in using differentiated instruction as part of a student support system. In this lesson, I tailored activities to meet the diverse needs of my students by incorporating various instructional strategies. For example, I provided visual aids, such as pictures from the story "Taking Care of Pepper," to support English Language Learners (ELLs) in understanding key concepts. I also used sentence frames and allowed students to act out sentence predicates, which provided structured language practice for students with language difficulties. I offered opportunities for gifted and talented students to engage with more advanced texts or assist their peers, extending their learning beyond the core lesson. Additionally, I implemented audiobooks and paired reading buddies for students with special needs, ensuring that all learners could follow along with the text at their own pace. These strategies helped create a supportive, inclusive learning environment where students of all abilities could engage with the material and succeed.
The differentiated instruction had a positive impact on student learning by accommodating a variety of abilities and learning styles in the classroom. ELLs and students with special needs could access the content through visual supports and structured language activities, while advanced learners were challenged with more complex tasks. This approach ensured that all students could engage with the material at their own level, fostering an inclusive learning environment where each student could thrive. For future use, I would modify the lesson by incorporating more technology, such as interactive vocabulary or sentence- building apps, allowing students to work independently and receive immediate feedback. Additionally, I would integrate more formative assessments throughout the lesson, such as quick comprehension checks during the phonics activity or individual conferencing during the graphic organizer task, to ensure all students progress and receive the support they need.
